Example C.E.R. Paragraph and Breakdown

Topic Sentence: The novel, Night, by Elie Wiesel is an eye opening look at the inhumanity that existed during the Holocaust.

Claim 1: The Nazi Party painted a dark picture of human nature and the inhumanity that is possible.

Evidence 1: The book read, “Without passion, without haste, they slaughtered their prisoners. Each one had to go up to the hole and present his neck. Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets” (p. 4).

Claim 2: Furthermore, the loss of humanity extended to the Jews themselves.

Evidence 2: During one experience, the Kapos, prisoners appointed as supervisors, and other prisoners beat the new prisoners as they were entering camp (p. 32).

Reasoning: This is important because most humans tend to believe this kind of treachery is not possible. The Holocaust is a true tale of the loss of humanity.
